Dr. Angelina Speaks on the Wegovy “Skinny Shot” & Obesity within the WOC Community

Please tell us a little about who you are and what kind of work you’re doing!

I am the CEO and cofounder of IBI HealthCare Institute and Surgicare Arts anesthetics, creator of OriOr SkinCare and owner of four surgical centers. We provide first class, affordable and transparent surgical care to all patients.

Talk to us about Wegovy or the “SKINNY SHOT”. What is it for, who makes a great candidate, and what are the risks if any?

Wegovy or semaglutide is FDA approved medicine that belongs to a class of drugs that have been around for almost 20 years. It is for the treatment of the medical condition known as obesity, patients at risk of becoming obese, patients with insulin resistance, and patients dealing with PCOS. There are many other benefits that have been shown, including cardio protective and anti inflammatory properties.

The risks are minimal and are easily controlled with appropriate medical guidance.

What do you think about weight-loss issues in general within the women of color community?

Women of color that deal with obesity often do not get the care they need and many other medical conditions get overlooked as well. This medicine is not just not to change the size or weight of the person but it is helpful for women of color who are at higher risk for obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and many other conditions.

What are your thoughts on the importance of weight-loss for patients that battle with diabetes? Is there anything you can share with us on diabetes prevention?

One of the main risk factors with type 2 diabetes is obesity so losing weight will help in prevention. We know that type 2 diabetes and weight gain are genetic so it is important to stick to healthier choices and to try not to gain excess weight.

As you’ve acquired so much experience on your journey in healthcare and medicine, what have been some of your biggest challenges?

Education. There is so much misinformation, and now more negative news than ever on treatments of obesity. There is a lot of fat shaming and at the same time shame in trying to treat the condition.

Do you have any advice for women looking to dive into research and studies on Wegovy? Are there any sites or books you can recommend to our readers?

I love starting off my patients with reading Obesity Code by Dr. Fung. I also made a summary of information on my website https://www.surgicarearts.com/slimmed-shot-atlanta/

Is there anything you have coming up soon that you’d like to share with us? How can we keep in touch with you and connect for news and updates?
